MADE IN THE USA WITH ARTISANAL EXCELLENCE: MEET RACHEL BORGHARD FROM DOOZ NYC
This month in honor of Women’s History Month, we are excited to spotlight Dooz, a luxury handbag brand that redefines the intersection of art, design, and sustainability. We sat down with the creative mind Rachel to learn more about the ethos behind Dooz and its commitment to being made in the USA.
About Dooz:
Dooz is a luxury handbag brand that combines the worlds of fine arts, architecture, and industrial design. The collection is inspired by sculptural forms that push the boundaries of traditional accessories, transforming handbags into pieces of art. Each bag is handcrafted in New York from the finest Italian Nappa leather, suede, and custom hardware, ensuring a perfect blend of artistic design and timeless craftsmanship.
How did Dooz come to life?
The journey of Dooz is rooted from a lifelong passion for the arts. While earning a BFA in Fashion Design at Pratt Institute, Rachel had the opportunity to study abroad at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. There, she immersed herself in the works of design legends such as Charles & Ray Eames and Arne Jacobsen, which profoundly influenced her design sensibility. After years of working for luxury brands, she launched Dooz, bringing her years of expertise in craftsmanship, product development, and raw materials to life in the form of these uniquely sculptural handbags.
What is your artisan process?
The creative process at Dooz is rooted in hands-on experimentation. Starting with mood boards and sketches, Rachel then moves to three-dimensional models, often using paper to construct and refine the shapes before transitioning to leather. This tactile, intuitive approach is deeply influenced by architecture, where manipulating material helps to explore structure and form.
What does "made to wear" and sustainability mean to you?
For Dooz, sustainability is about creating pieces that are built to last. The focus is on responsible materials, quality craftsmanship, and designs that age beautifully over time. "Sustainability is not just about the product itself but also about the people behind it," says the founder. Every Dooz bag is produced in small batches to minimize waste, using natural materials that endure. Additionally, the artisans behind Dooz’s creations are paid fair, living wages, ensuring that ethical production practices align with the brand's commitment to sustainability.
How do you think fashion brands can continue to be sustainable?
“Sustainability in fashion starts with intentionality. Designing with longevity in mind, using responsibly sourced materials, and supporting local craftsmanship. Brands can also focus on reducing excess production, exploring alternative materials, and educating consumers on the value of investing in well- made pieces over disposable trends.”
Why is being made in the USA important to Dooz?
Producing bags in New York City is integral to the DNA of Dooz. It allows the brand to maintain strict quality control, foster close relationships with skilled artisans, and ensure ethical production. "Manufacturing locally not only reduces our carbon footprint but also reinforces our brand’s authenticity. New York is the heart of Dooz—its energy and its women inspire every design. We believe that producing locally strengthens our story and our commitment to the city we love."
What's next for Dooz?
This spring and summer, Dooz is launching some exciting new pieces, including the Gigi Tote, the Mini Céleste, and several new colorways for existing designs. The Gigi Tote, with its innovative construction, features a removable suede liner and is designed to be worn in two versatile ways. The Mini Céleste, a sleek, functional bag, features a strap that transforms between four different lengths, making it the perfect adaptable accessory for any occasion. These new releases reflect Dooz’s continued commitment to meaningful design evolution. Available for pre-order now.
Why support Dooz?
When you support Dooz, you're investing in more than just a luxury handbag, you're supporting local craftsmanship, sustainable practices, and thoughtful design. Each bag tells a story of artistry, durability, and ethical responsibility, making it a piece that you can wear with pride.
